Research Interests
Functional polymers in Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) economy
A circular economy is a model of production and consumption to achieve sustainable development. The life cycle of products is extended, and waste is reduced to a minimum by keeping the materials within the economy. In the materials aspect, fossil-based plastic products have been widely used, leading to a pollution crisis due to thematerial’s durability. Alternatively, bio-based bioplastics have attracted vast attention due to their renewability, non-toxicity, degradability, and biocompatibility. Although these materials are degradable, recycling their post-consumer products is considered effective and sustainable, especially by converting them to value-added starting materials for other functional materials. In our laboratory, chemical recycling processes for post-consumer polyesters and polyolefins have been developed to generate various small- sized compounds with functional groups. These are used as as starting materials for various functional polyesters, polyurethanes, additives, and adhesive products. These products are designed to be repeatedly used via chemical recycling to achieve a circular economy.
Functional responsive polymeric hybrid nanoparticles
Stimuli-responsive polymeric hybrid particles are of great interest for use in various applications, especially in biomedical and environmental fields. The materials are powerful tools for encapsulation and controlled delivery of various active compounds, as these can specifically respond to physical and chemical changes in their environment, such as temperature, photoirradiation, ultrasound, magnetic field, pH, redox species, and biomolecules. In our laboratory, various polymeric hybrid particles have been synthesized, and their potential applications are assessed. For example, magnetic polymeric nanoparticles (MPNPs) with responsive to an external magnetic field and induction heating, biodegradable/biocompatible microspheres with solid or hollow structures and tunable morphology, chitosan nanoparticles and membranes with antibacterial properties, and temperature-sensitive gating biodegradable nanoparticles for encapsulation and delivery of drugs at the body temperature.
